Chapter 9

Max

Ravi comes with a bowl of warm water and a lathering brush when I get out of the shower. Wrapping a towel around my waist, I stand in front of the large mirror and scan myself. I have always had a lean body. But even without real food and months of toiling in the jungle, I look bigger and leaner than ever. Or it might be just because I am tanned all over.

Ravi wets the shaving soap and lathers it with the brush as if I am going to let him shave my cheeks. Valet or not, I am not going to expose my throat to anyone who has a blade in his hands. Who knows, if he is working for someone else?

I don’t know anything about this guy at all and I am ashamed to admit I didn’t run a background check. He said he worked as a valet of some officer whom I don’t know. Since I thought his duties won’t extend other than taking my clothes to the laundry room, I didn’t bother to press that matter.

Moreover, it would look odd and attract attention to not have a valet for an officer my level. I have been given strict orders not to expose my identity, especially to the army guys. Now, Ravi has every opportunity to watch my moves and be near me without needing a pretext. I should be more careful from now on.

“That’s okay, Ravi. I will do it myself. I’ll call you when I need.”

“Yes, Saheb.” Ravi bows his head and takes his leave through the door, without showing his back to me.

Queer customs, these Indians have. He is calling a random guy from a random country in the world, Saheb, or master, just because he is getting paid five dollars every month. I don’t know if it is subservience or conmanship. But I am sure that I am not to blindly trust, anyone around me, even my host Salil Mehta.

I made some inquiry at Delhi about his background. Salil Mehta is a member of an old business family, with properties all over the city. He is friendly with both the British and the national movement. It is possible that he is still keeping some contact with leaders of the rebel faction, as every businessman and royal in the subcontinent do. No one knows who will have power tomorrow. So, everyone is sucking up to everyone else. That’s all they could provide me. I am supposed to be the one to send the intelligence, not them, they did let me know in the end.

Mr. Mehta is no exception. There is nothing that suggests he is the target. It may well be another businessman in the same social circle, someone who openly speaks for the ILF, which are quite many. But someone who has a real connection with the rebel group will try to hide it, rather than trying to gain attention, by being the devil’s advocate. Furthermore, Mehta is the most accessible person in the elite.
